Plague Alchemist is a pixel-art RPG about alchemy, exploration and a mysterious plague. Developed and published by Hardcoded, it places you in the role of an outcast doctor investigating a strange illness that leaves villagers trapped in an unnatural sleep.

The plague appears to be connected to a collision between magical and non-magical realms, with corruption spreading through the world’s leylines. Your task is to investigate its origins, gather ingredients, experiment with alchemy and uncover what has happened to the land.

Unlike many fantasy RPGs, Plague Alchemist has no combat or character death. Its focus is on discovery, potion-making, environmental puzzles and gradual progression.

The game launched in Steam Early Access on 25 May 2026. The current version contains only part of the planned world and story, with further regions, dungeons, quests and crafting systems intended for future updates.

Key Features

Experiment with alchemy

Potion-making is the central mechanic. Rather than simply selecting a recipe from a menu, you work with ingredients and learn how they behave, testing combinations and recording your discoveries in laboratory notes. The emphasis is on understanding the underlying rules of alchemy and applying what you learn to create useful potions.

Explore a corrupted world

Travel through forests, ruins and damaged landscapes while collecting herbs, minerals and rare ingredients. The world changes with time and weather, giving exploration an atmospheric quality. Discoveries help you understand the plague and provide materials for your experiments.

Investigate the plague

As an outcast doctor, you investigate the strange illness affecting the villagers. Following its trail leads towards the world’s decaying leylines and the relationship between magical and non-magical realms.

The story develops through exploration, quests and your growing understanding of the world.

Solve environmental puzzles

The planned adventure includes elemental dungeons associated with Earth, Fire, Water, Air, Body, Mind and Spirit. These are intended to introduce new environments, alchemical materials and puzzles. Because the game is still in Early Access, not all of this planned content is available yet.

Progress without combat

Plague Alchemist takes a different approach from traditional RPGs. There are no combat encounters or character deaths; the challenge comes from investigation, experimentation, exploration and understanding its systems. This makes it an interesting prospect for players who enjoy fantasy worlds and methodical problem-solving but prefer not to fight enemies.

Who is Plague Alchemist for?

Plague Alchemist is a pixel-art RPG game that may appeal to players who enjoy:

  • Alchemy and potion-making
  • Pixel-art RPGs
  • Exploration and discovery
  • Gathering and crafting
  • Atmospheric fantasy settings
  • Environmental puzzles
  • Story-driven progression
  • Games without combat
  • Learning systems through experimentation

It is particularly worth considering if you enjoy the hands-on experimentation of Potion Craft but would prefer to explore a wider world rather than run a potion shop.

Early Access note: The game is still developing, and only a limited portion of the planned adventure is available. The developer estimates an Early Access period of around two to four years.

The current Steam listing identifies the game as single-player and in Early Access. I could not verify announced console releases.

Final Thoughts

Plague Alchemist is a pixel-art RPG that takes a familiar fantasy premise and builds its gameplay around careful experimentation rather than combat. Its combination of potion-making, exploration and environmental puzzles could suit players who like to work things out for themselves.

The absence of fighting is a notable distinction, especially for anyone who prefers discovery and crafting to action-oriented RPG mechanics. However, the current Early Access version is still a work in progress, so it is best approached as an evolving project rather than a finished story.

A little housekeeping: this site is just for fun and games (literally). No payment, no sponsorships, no affiliate links (though you might spot a Steam link, purely because I’m helpful like that). Sometimes I am gifted a game, demo, or playtest spot, and I’ll always flag it when that’s the case. But gifted or not, I only write about games I genuinely enjoyed. If it’s not for me, it just quietly doesn’t get a post. No negativity here, only good vibes and cosy recommendations. One last thing: prices, features, and availability can shift after I post, so it’s always worth to double-check before you buy.
